Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has set up a new website to encourage government employees to come forward on corruption in our state. Is this just more hypocrisy and useless rhetoric in a state rich with corruption? Ironically, the state of Illinois and its taxpayers have paid and continue to pay high priced private law firms to fight my First Amendment case. To date approximately 1.3 million dollars of the taxpayers money has been paid to these legal beagles whose goal is to make sure government employees continue to lose their freedom of speech. Whistle blower laws have been non-existent in Illinois and most believe they are just false promises by a state rich in scandal and cover ups.
In 2006, the George W. Bush administration pushed the United States Supreme Court to limit the First Amendment, freedom of speech protections for those government employees who speak out on corruption in government while "on the job." The ramifications for the honest police officers who have come forward on corruption has been stymied across the United States with agencies more willing to silence their employees and ignore or cover up the wrongdoing to circumvent scandal or civil law suits.
